Mid-sized SUVs are purpose-built family vehicles designed to swallow up all the stuff you can throw in them. But which does it best?

These are the cars within the medium SUV category in the VFACTS sales charts published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

We’ve crunched the numbers, using boot capacity figures calculated to the VDA standard where possible for the sake of consistency.

We’ve also measured based on the variant with the most boot space in the range, as some trim or powertrain options may see the figures quoted here cut slightly.

    Chery Tiggo 7 Pro

The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro has you covered when it comes to loading up the boot, boasting 626L of cargo room with the seats up – 26L more than the next best car on this list.

Coming in at under $40,000 drive-away for the base model, the Tiggo 7 Pro comes standard with a sunroof, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats.

Every Tiggo 7 Pro is sold with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

    Citroen C5 AirCross

The French manufacturers are known for producing some quirky cars, so it’s no surprise that the Citroen C5 AirCross is one of just two cars in this segment with a 35/30/35 seat split.

It’s a rare layout, almost as rare as the car itself considering only 41 were sold last year.

There’s only one variant available – the AirCross Sport – which sells for $54,990 before on-road costs.

Power is derived from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which drives the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
