Price & Specs
Interior
It's back-to-basics in here, although the handsome steering wheel and Volkswagen-like switchgear on the doors add some glamour.
The synthetic leather-trimmed driver's seat has height adjustment as well as tilting and sliding, but unfortunately the steering wheel only moves up and down and does not telescope.

The centre screen is flanked by faux carbon-fibre trim, while silvery plastic inserts and soft touch points make it feel a little nicer. The vinyl seat trims are easy to keep clean.
The back seats are relatively capacious by class standards, for adults 180cm or below. The boot is 359L with five seats in use, which is about what you'd expect of a lower small hatchback.
A temporary space-saving spare wheel sits below the loading floor.

Exterior
A key factor behind the ZS's take-up is its design.
It's fairly anonymous, but its curves and proportions are contemporary. Nobody will know you're in a budget SUV unless they're real car people.

- Diamond Red Metallic

Cost of Ownership
The 2022 MG ZS is covered by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
MG offers capped-price servicing under its Precise Price Service scheme.
Servicing is required every 12 months or 10,000km, and currently the first seven services cost $243, $285, $293, $343, $243, $335 and $243, respectively, or $1985 over seven years.
How it Drives
It's a pretty simple bit of kit, with electric power steering with a few modes of resistance, MacPherson strut front suspension, and a torsion beam at the rear. It has disc brakes at each end.
It's not the final word in agile handling or cushy ride, but for those hopping out of a used vehicle should prove a pleasant enough bit of A-to-B transport.
ZS Safety Rating
There’s no active safety technology like autonomous emergency braking available, though a full suite of active safety and driver assist features is standard on the ZST.
Standard fit includes front, front-side, and curtain airbags, as well as a reversing camera with rear parking sensors.
ZS Lifecycle
MG focuses more on the updated MG ZST family now, and keeps the regular ZS around as a price-leader.
It's a five-year old design so has some life in it yet – for precedent look at how old the ASX's design is.
ZS Options
What you see is what you get, there are no options on the MG ZS.
ZS Warranty
MG suggested that owners service their 2022 MG ZS every 6 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first.
The 2022 MG ZS had a 7 year, unlimited km warranty.
ZS Stock Availability
MG has better stock of the ZS than most of its rivals.
The brand earlier this year welcomed its own shipload of cars Down Under, and hasn't been hit by the same supply crunch as other carmakers due to its different supply chains.
ZS Boot Space
Boot space is 359L with the rear seats upright, and 1166L with them folded flat.
ZS Fuel Economy
MG claims combined-cycle economy of 7.1 litres per 100km and a 48L fuel tank.
The 2022 MG ZS is Combined (7.1) and E10 Compatible (Yes).
ZS Dimensions
The 2022 MG ZS measures 4314mm long, 1809mm including the mirrors, and 1644mm tall (1620mm excluding the roof rails). It rides a 2585mm wheelbase.
The 2022 MG ZS measures 4314mm long, 1809mm wide and 1644mm tall, with a 2585mm tall wheelbase.
The 2022 MG ZS has a braked towing capacity of 500kg and an unbraked towing capacity of 500kg.
ZS Market Fit
Nothing beats the MG ZS on price. At $21,990 on the road, it actually competes better against used cars.
ZS Sales Data
In a market where rivals are jacking up prices, the MG has skated to top spot on the sales charts.
The company sold 18,423 ZS and ZST models in 2021 combined, nearly 15 per cent 'Small SUV under $40k' market share.
Should you buy the ZS
We won't pretend it's a class-leader, and if you prefer to spend your money on brands with long and uninterrupted periods in the market, then it's not for you.
But if you want a new SUV for the price of rival used ones, then it's on a list of one at this price.
Competitor Analysis
The Haval Jolion matches it on value, the Mitsubishi ASX has more space, the Toyota Yaris Cross has a hybrid option, the Mazda CX-3 offers similar style with a nicer interior, and the Hyundai Venue comes with more badge cred.
