The modern day Commodore vs Falcon battle is without a doubt the Toyota HiLux vs the Ford Ranger.

Month after month, these rival utes typically sit atop the sales charts in Australia. And combined, 4×2 and 4×4 ute sales make up the largest segment in Australia in terms of sales volume.

We therefore thought it would be fun to provide a visual representation of ute sales since 1997, focusing on the segment’s best sellers.

For this purpose we have combined each model’s 4×2 and 4×4 sales, even though these are recorded separately in VFACTS.

Above, you can see a representation of how ute sales have compared over the last 25 years year-by-year.

Below is a cumulative graph of sales for the last 25 years for the best-selling ute models. Press play to view.

For clarity, we’ve combined Holden Colorado and Rodeo sales, as well as the Ford Ranger and Courier.

Did you think the Ford Ranger’s dominance as the second best-selling ute in Australia of all time was so recent?
