The first-generation Haval H6 didn’t make much of an impact in Australia, but its successor is becoming an increasingly popular member of the mid-sized SUV segment.

With handsome styling, a seven-year warranty and the rare-for-this-segment options of a hybrid powertrain and a coupe SUV body style, it’s not hard to see the appeal of the GWM Haval H6 even if the brand may still be unfamiliar to many Australian punters.

It’s even more popular in its home market of China, where in 2021 it was the best-selling SUV overall.

GWM Haval H6 availability and wait times

GWM Haval Australia says stocks of both the H6 and H6 GT are “healthy” and that a customer “should in most cases be able to take close-to-immediate delivery”.

    GWM Haval H6 lifecycle

The current-generation H6 launched locally in 2021, with the hybrid and GT ‘coupe SUV’ joining the range in 2022.

Although Chinese brands tend to work on faster life cycles than the broader industry, the H6 has plenty of life left in it yet.

    GWM Haval H6 interior

The GWM Haval H6 and H6 GT both seat five occupants.

The back seat is a comfortable place to sit. There’s plenty of room in every dimension – someone 180cm tall can even sit in the middle seat and have headroom to spare, even on models with the panoramic sunroof.

The GT may have a sleeker roofline but there’s still plenty of headroom in it, too. Legroom is ample with both body styles, while the floor is nice and flat.

Child seats can be positioned using one of the three top-tether anchor points or the ISOFIX anchor points on each outboard seat.

Below the ‘floating’ centre console up front, you’ll find a large, flat storage area. More storage can be found in the front doors, which feature cutouts large enough to accommodate a 1L bottle. The centre console bin is well-sized and opens with the press of a button.

In terms of second-row amenities, there are two USB-A outlets, a fold-down armrest with two cupholders, and rear air vents. The storage cutouts in the doors, however, lack a proper cutout for bottles like in most rivals.
