MG has confirmed it will launch its next-generation ZS crossover in 2024.

UK publication Autocar reports word from MG the Chinese brand will bring a raft of new model updates and a new flagship SUV to its line-up during 2024.

UPDATE, 11/12/23: MG Australia has provided a statement regarding the future of the ZS SUV in Australia.

“The new ZS is definitely in our sights. We haven’t made any firm decision on when we will see an updated ZS in Australia however, the ZS’s success shows there is a continued demand for affordable SUVs,” a spokesperson from MG Australia told CarExpert.

That includes a replacement for the current ZS and ZS EV, with the latter reportedly moving to the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) underpinning the MG 4.

CarExpert has reached out to MG Australia to confirm when the new-generation ZS will be available locally.

“MG’s plans roughly look like this: in the first half of the year, the existing fuel vehicle products will be strengthened; in the second half of the year, we will focus on electric models,” the general manager of MG’s business unit, Lu Jiajun, told Autocar.

“We will not give up the fuel-vehicle market. After all, many global markets still favour traditional vehicles.”

The ZS family, which includes the ZS, ZS EV and updated ZST, is Australia’s best-selling small SUV range.

The ZS launched here in 2017, with the ZS EV following in 2020. MG also launched the ZST here in 2020, a facelifted version of the ZS with more safety equipment.

Locally, the MG ZS and ZST are offered with a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, with the latter also offering a turbocharged 1.3-litre four.

The ZS EV features a single-motor front-wheel drive electric powertrain.

In Thailand, MG offers a related SUV with a hybrid powertrain but calls it the VS HEV. It offers different front end and interior styling to our local model.

According to VFACTS sales data, between January and November 2023, MG Australia sold 27,736 examples of its ZS, which includes the ZST and ZS EV.

It comfortably outsells the second-place Mazda CX-30 (12,308), followed by the Hyundai Kona (10,188) and GWM Haval Jolion (10,169)
