The MG HS range has carried over unchanged into 2022, however it’s set to grow later in the year.

After launching with just two variants in 2020, the range has expanded to a total of eight and will gain a ninth – a more affordable version of the Plus EV plug-in hybrid – in the first quarter of this year.

It’ll offer the same suite of active safety and driver assist features as the rest of the HS range but likely exclude some of the niceties of the current Plus EV, which is offered only in top-spec Essence trim.

Those features include a panoramic sunroof and a surround-view camera.

Otherwise, the range is unchanged. That includes pricing, which starts at $29,990 drive-away for the Core 1.5T and tops out at $47,990 drive-away for the Plus EV Essence.

Last year, MG sold 6828 HS SUVs, aided by strong supply levels. That figure put it ahead of the Ford Escape (1673) and Volkswagen Tiguan (3772), a whisker behind the Honda CR-V (6875), and nipping at the heels of the Kia Sportage (7949).

With sales up 162.6 per cent, only the Haval H6 (3635, up 279.8 per cent) saw greater growth in the mid-sized SUV segment in 2021.

Excite X and Essence X models upgrade to a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 168kW of power and 360Nm of torque. It’s mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive.

The front-wheel drive HS Plus EV uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, an electric motor on the front axle and a 16.6kWh lithium-ion battery.

Total system outputs are 189kW of power and 370Nm of torque.

Fuel Economy

Claimed fuel economy for the 2022 MG HS is 7.3L/100km on the combined cycle in models with the 1.5-litre engine, 9.5L/100km in those with the 2.0-litre engine, and 1.7L/100km in the Plus EV.

The latter has a claimed 63km of pure electric range, however this is on the lenient NEDC standard.

These figures drop to 451L and 1275L in the Plus EV, which also misses out on a space saver spare and instead offers only a tyre repair kit.
