Toyota Australia is recalling 5925 examples of the Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV to rectify an issue with the motor generator electronic control unit (MG-ECU), which could prevent the electric motor from operating correctly.
“Due to a manufacturing issue with the motor generator electronic control unit (MG-ECU), the motor initialisation process may not complete correctly. This may prevent the electric motor from operating as intended at higher speeds,” said Toyota in its recall notice.
“If the electric motor does not operate as intended, warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle may enter fail-safe mode or shut down, resulting in a loss of motive power. A loss of motive power whilst driving increases the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Toyota Australia says it will contact affected owners in writing to arrange repairs at their preferred Toyota dealership, free of charge.
It's the first recall for the RAV4 PHEV, which was launched in Australia earlier this year and accounted for 39 per cent of all RAV4 sales in its first full month on sale in July 2026, when the mid-size SUV was Australia's best-selling model.

A cheaper entry-level RAV4 GXL 2WD PHEV variant has since been announced by Toyota Australia and is scheduled to join the lineup in 2027.
The conventional RAV4 hybrid (HEV) lineup was included in a separate recall of 69,586 Toyota vehicles in July 2025, alongside the GR Yaris, Corolla, Corolla Cross, C-HR, Camry and Kluger. However, the PHEV was not listed among the affected variants.
