The Audi Q5 has received three new Limited Edition models, including a new entry-level variant, that have joined the range for the 2022 model year.

Available in both wagon and coupe SUV Sportback forms, the Audi Q5 is now available in a total of 12 variants with five different engines.

The range now opens with the Q5 35 TDI Limited Edition at $68,350 before on-road costs, and is topped by the SQ5 Sportback that costs $116,400 before on-road costs.

Pricing for the core Q5 and Q5 Sportback range went up by at least $2800 in February 2022 too as part of a wider Audi range price increase.

The new entry-level Q5 35 TDI Limited Edition receives a detuned 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with 12V mild-hybrid technology, which produces 120kW of power and 370Nm of torque. It’s a new engine locally.

Like all the other Q5 and Q5 Sportback models, excluding the 50 TDI and SQ5, it’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, however it sends drive to the front wheels only.

This marks a first for the Q5 in Australia as all other Q5 models have a quattro all-wheel drive system.

This new 35 TDI powertrain is expected to “occupy a permanent position in the Q5 range,” according to Audi Australia general manager of marketing Nick Reid.

Unlike the wagon range, Q5 Sportback models come standard with the sportier-looking S line package. Over in the wagon range, this package is only available in the 50 TDI.

In the first quarter of 2022, Audi sold a total of 908 Q5 models according to VFACTS, which includes Sportback models. It was outsold by the Lexus NX (1054 sales), BMW X3 (1050 sales), Volvo XC60 (1024 sales), and Mercedes-Benz GLC wagon (1012 sales).

These sales rifts only grow if you take into account certain models’ respective coupe SUV counterparts, including the BMW X4 (252 sales) and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe (421 sales).

The Audi Q5 did outsell the Porsche Macan (825 sales), Genesis GV70 (133 sales) and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (86 sales).

The powertrain sends drive to the front wheels only, which marks a first for the Q5 in Australia. All other Q5 models, besides the SQ5, have a quattro all-wheel drive system.

    The 40 TDI uses a higher-output 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with a 12V mild-system system producing 150kW and 400Nm.

    The 45 TFSI uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 12V mild-hybrid system producing 183kW and 370Nm.

All three of these turbocharged powertrains are mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

    The 50 TDI uses a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 features a 48V mild-hybrid system and produces 210kW and 620Nm.

    The SQ5 uses a higher-output 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine producing 251kW and 700Nm with a 48V mild-hybrid system.

Both the 50 TDI and the SQ5 use an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

The SQ5 uses a permanent all-wheel drive system with a self-locking centre differential that can send up to 85 per cent of torque to the rear wheels. By default, it directs 40 per cent to the front axle and 60 per cent to the rear.

    Fuel Economy

The 2022 Audi Q5 and SQ5 range has the following claimed combined fuel economy figures:

    • 50 TDI: 6.8L/100km
    • SQ5: 7.1L/100km

All Q5 models have a 70L fuel tank, with the petrol 45 TFSI engine requiring a minimum of 95 RON premium unleaded.

Every single powertrain is also fitted with an idle start-stop system.
