Toyota Australia says there are "no plans" to reintroduce the Prius nameplate Down Under, despite our nation's increasing hunger for hybrids and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch for the new RAV4 Hybrid, the vice president for marketing and sales at Toyota's local division – John Pappas – firmly closed the door when asked if there was any chance of the Prius returning..

"There's no plan at this stage to bring the Prius back," Mr Pappas said, despite his predecessor saying as recently as last year's 2025 Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo that the brand's hybrid hero could have "a potential future" in Australia again.

The latest fifth-generation Prius is available in various overseas markets, including other right-hand drive markets like the UK and Japan, and offers both hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.

Depending on variant, the Prius is powered by 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid systems already available here in the related Corolla and C-HR families, while the plug-in hybrid exclusively pairs a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a more powerful e-motor and larger battery pack.

The PHEV offers over 80km of WLTP electric driving range from its relatively small 13.6kWh battery, while the fuel efficiency leader amongst the conventional hybrids is the 1.8-litre version, which in Japan boasts a claim of 32.6km/L – converting to just 3.06L/100km.

The world's first mass-produced hybrid passenger vehicle was first launched in Australia back in 2001, and spearheaded Toyota's hybrid mission globally. While the current model never made it officially into Australia – though it's popular with grey importers – the Prius nameplate had a 21-year factory-backed run Down Under from generations one to four.

Since the Prius kicked off Toyota's hybrid journey at the turn of the millennium, the Japanese brand has notched up more than 600,000 deliveries of hybrid vehicles.

Last year, 48.6 per cent of all Toyota sales in Australia were hybrid models, led by the popular RAV4 SUV which returned 51,947 registrations – almost all were hybrid (99.9 per cent or 51,869 units), with petrol-only RAV4s discontinued in 2024.

Sales of hybrid vehicles in Australia continue to grow, with 2025's year-end results showing 15.3 per cent growth to 199,133 units, well up on the (also increasing) volumes of electric vehicles (103,270) and plug-in hybrids (53,484).
