The Toyota Prius is the hybrid hatchback that made petrol-electric motoring familiar to many Australians. It is no longer on sale as a new model locally, with Toyota's hybrid technology now spread across mainstream models such as the Corolla, Camry, RAV4 and Kluger. The Prius was defined by efficiency, aerodynamic styling and a cabin focused on low running costs over excitement. Later generations became more refined and better to drive, but the core appeal stayed the same: outstanding fuel economy and proven hybrid reliability. Its role in Australia has changed as hybrids moved from novel to normal, yet the Prius remains one of the most important electrified vehicles ever sold here.
