Australia’s long-running top-selling vehicle, Toyota HiLux, broke its monthly sales record in June 2022, with 7582 units finding their way into customer hands, up 40 per cent.

That’s more than the June totals of the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Tritoncombined.

A great deal of these were deliveries to customers who’d been waiting quite some time, with some dealers reporting wait times on certain high-demand grades of HiLux of 12-18 months.

It’s no orphan in this regard in these supply-constrained times, with numerous competitors facing the same issues.

June is always a bumper month for light commercials given end-of-financial-year incentives for business buyers – with the HiLux’s previous high-water mark being 6537 sales in June 2020.

The Toyota HiLux’s 7582 sales also put it miles ahead of its fellow top 10 models. Number two across all segments was the Hyundai Tucson (2840), ahead of the Ranger (still 2802), and Toyota Corolla (2605).

The Toyota was dominant in both the 4×2 and 4×4 markets, no doubt helped by the fact that arch-rival Ford is in the lull period as it gears up to launch its brand new Ranger from this month, meaning stock of the old car is about gone.

The HiLux owned a massive 59.1 per cent market share of the 4×2 unit market in June with 2227 sales, and 30.7 per cent of the larger 4×4 market with 5355 sales.

While Toyota is staying pretty quiet, we’re expecting an updated HiLux to be revealed this year, to take some thunder from that newer Ranger. Expect better interior technologies to feature, though we’d be surprised if there were any drastic mechanical changes.
