While MG Motor Australia sees its just-launched, value-priced MG 4 electric hatchback as game-changing, it also has its sights set on going upmarket with a luxury SUV called the LS6.

MG recently confirmed the LS7 SUV and L7 SUV – from SAIC Motor’s luxury IM Motors division – had been earmarked for Australia.

However, that’s no longer the case, according to MG Motor Australia boss, Peter Ciao, who has ruled out the LS7 and L7, instead telling CarExpert he is keen to bring the equally luxurious, but slightly smaller IM LS6 mid-sized SUV to this market.

IM (Intelligence In Motion), is a luxury brand in its home market of China, but Mr Ciao says he would like to see the LS6 wear the familiar MG octagon here.

“I’m still working on this and negotiating with the factory, but I trust the MG brand is capable of selling a wide range of vehicles across a wide range of prices, up to and above $100,000. I don’t think that’s a challenge,” Mr Ciao told CarExpert.

“In terms of luxury cars under the MG brand in Australia, I have three options, but my aim is to bring the luxury LS6 here first.”

The IM LS6 is expected to launch in China late in 2023 or early in 2024, though Australian buyers will likely have to wait until 2025 for it.

Whereas the IM LS7 is a large luxury SUV, and the L7 a large luxury sedan stretching more than five metres in length, the yet-to-be launched LS6 is a mid-sized luxury SUV.

It measures 4904mm long, 1988mm wide and 1669mm tall on a 2950mm wheelbase.

It’s set to offer a pair of dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrains, with the more powerful of the two pumping out 379kW.

The vehicle was revealed in a Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filing, and closely resembles the larger LS7.

Its cabin also features full-width screens and a steering yoke, which Mr Ciao said he would like to see in Australian delivered cars.

The LS6 won’t be the only MG-badged vehicle set to wear a price tag north of $100,000 in Australia, with the Cyberster electric roadster also due here in 2025.
