The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX will be a tech and EV efficiency showcase, so it’s no surprise to learn it will make its in-the-flesh debut at CES 2022 in Las Vegas.
Described by the company as a “software-defined research prototype” the EQXX is said to be “most efficient vehicle the brand has ever built”.
Part of this, it seems, will be due to the car’s aerodynamics. From the teaser we can see the EQXX will have a rounded nose, a heavily curved roofline, and a long tapered tail.
As a consequence, the passenger compartment looks to be quite small for what could quite a large vehicle.
Given its billing as a “research prototype” it seems unlikely the EQXX will lead directly to a production model. It’s far more likely some of the software and efficiency technologies designed for the concept will end up in future Mercedes-Benz models.
The automaker says it brought teams together from across the company and they designed the EQXX “in record time”.
Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz said it would switch to an electric-only line-up from 2030 “where market conditions allow”. It’s unclear when the brand will make the full transition across the globe.
EQC 
EQA
While a laudable goal, it is seemingly less ambitious than Volvo’s commitment to be EV-only from 2030, and Audi’s desire to ditch internal combustion engines by 2033 outside of China. This week Lexus said it was aiming to be EV-only in Europe, North America and China by 2030.
From around 2023, the three-pointed star will have an electric model for every size class the brand competes in.
Mercedes-Benz began launching electric vehicles under its EQ sub-brand in 2019 with the EQC, which was a redesigned GLC. It continued along this path with the EQV people mover, EQA small crossover, and EQB crossover.
An electric version of the G-Class — to be named, you guessed it, EQG — is in the pipeline.
EQS 
EQE
The first cars to use a dedicated EV platform made their debut this year: the aerodynamic, but controversially-styled, EQS and EQE sedans. These will be followed up next year by the EQS SUV and EQE SUV.
The EQS is scheduled to touch down in Australia from late 2021, and will join the EQA and EQC in the company’s local EV range.
