Is Volkswagen developing a new Tiguan R after all?

The previous Volkswagen Tiguan R hasn't been officially confirmed for a sequel, but a new prototype spotted testing in Europe suggests the performance SUV is back on the table.

Carspotters will notice that while this development mule is based on a Tiguan R-Line, the quad exhaust outlets are a signature Volkswagen R design element, while the larger wheel and brake package hint at the high-performance intentions of this upcoming model.

Interestingly, the rims fitted to this test car are Audi Sport units that were available with the most recent Audi RSQ3. It's unclear whether the new-generation Q3 will also gain a performance version, but its shared MQB evo underpinnings suggest that such a model – or perhaps the first SQ3 – is more than possible.

Peeping through the rear privacy glass, you can also see this prototype is fitted with a roll cage – unlikely to make it to production, but worthy of mention.

It's not too difficult to theorise what will power a new Tiguan R, given we already know that Volkswagen is planning to launch a new T-Roc R in 2027.

The existing Mk8.5 Golf R's 245kW/420Nm 2.0 TSI turbo-petrol four will almost certainly be the powertrain of choice, likely teamed with a fuel-saving 48V mild-hybrid system as per the upcoming T-Roc R.

A sports-tuned seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic will send drive to a 4Motion all-wheel drive system in the T-Roc, and like every other MQB evo product with the latest version of this powertrain – eg: Golf R, Audi S3 and Cupra Formentor VZx – it will offer a torque splitter on the rear axle that can shift torque between either rear wheel when cornering.

Other expected features include R-specific trim elements, performance displays for the driver's Digital Cockpit and central infotainment displays, as well as the availability of racier front bucket seats.

Currently, the most potent Tiguan is the 195kW 2.0 TSI with 4Motion all-wheel drive, which quotes a 5.9-second dash from 0-100km/h.

With the T-Roc R confirmed and scheduled for a potential reveal before the end of 2026 – perhaps at October's Paris motor show – expect the Tiguan R to follow sometime in 2027.

Australia has long been a key market for the Volkswagen R performance division, regularly ranking in the top five markets globally for VW's flagship performance models. As recently as 2024, Australia was fourth behind Germany, USA and Canada, and ahead of the UK.

Further, Australia was the second-ranked market for the outgoing T-Roc R in 2024, and top-ranked in 2023. It creates a strong case for Volkswagen Australia to have its hand up for both the new T-Roc R and Tiguan R once they hit production.

Last year at the launch of the updated Mk8.5 Golf R, head of sales and marketing at the Volkswagen R performance division, Pedro Martinez Diaz, left the door open for a hot new-gen Tiguan despite it not being confirmed.

“I would never say no. The Tiguan [R] was very successful in Europe and Australia… we’ll see,” Mr Martinez Diaz said.
