The Jaecoo J7 is the latest model in Australia to get the black edition treatment.

It's priced at $49,990 drive-away, or $2000 more than the flagship SHS-P Summit AWD plug-in hybrid (PHEV) it's based on. The special-edition mid-size SUV arrives in dealerships this month, with test drives commencing in mid-November.

Exterior chrome has been stripped away, with the grille, wheels, mirrors and roof rails, among other external elements, now finished in black.

Inside, it gains a dark headliner and dark pillar trim.

The SHS-P Summit AWD it's based on was only just announced in September as part of a reshuffled model year 2027 (MY27) lineup for the J7.

The Black Edition shares the same powertrain, mating a 105kW/215Nm turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 150kW/310Nm front and 113kW/210Nm rear electric motors, with total system outputs of 260kW of power and 490Nm of torque.

It uses a dedicated hybrid transmission, while the engine runs on 91-octane regular unleaded fuel.

The 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery can be charged at up to 6.6kW on AC power and 40kW on DC power, with electric range of 80km on the NEDC cycle and fuel consumption of 1.9L/100km.

Black editions – sometimes referred to as 'black packs' – are an easy way to generate further interest in a model, particularly given the enduring popularity of black exterior finishes and black interiors in Australia.

There have been over a dozen new black editions launched in Australia in 2026 alone.

Looking just at mid-size SUVs like the Jaecoo J7, these have included the Mitsubishi Outlander LS Black Edition, Zeekr 7X Black Special Edition, Xpeng G6 AWD Edition, and Cupra Terramar Tribe Edition Black.
