GMC has partnered with overlanding solutions company EarthCruiser to offer a go-anywhere Hummer EV with solar power and a carbon-fibre camper module.

The EarthCruiser GMC Hummer Upfit is an extensively modified Hummer EV designed to offer a “new standard in zero-tailpipe emission overlanding possibilities”.

In doing so, EarthCruiser has taken a Hummer EV and added a carbon-fibre, camper-style module to the rear of the Hummer, complete with a roof-top tent.

“We are proud to work with GMC on the design and manufacturing of such an exceptional product. It feels right, it feels like it belongs,” said EarthCruiser founder and CEO Lance Gillies.

“This collaboration with the GMC team has provided the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the zero-tailpipe emission possibilities for overland and recreational vehicle travellers.”

To achieve this vision, the camping module seen on the Hummer features “insulated tri-layered” carbon-fibre construction that is “fully integrated” into the chassis of the Hummer.

The module can be expanded vertically to increase room inside, with the space able to accommodate two adults on a “full RV bed”.

Inside, there’s 2032mm of standing room at the entry and 889mm in the bed area.

To power the camper, EarthCruiser has fitted a 605W onboard solar system that recharges a 6kWh 12V lithium battery.

GMC estimates the system can power the camper for seven days, including the selection of standard onboard appliances. This system is controlled from the camper’s interior through a seven-inch touchscreen.

EarthCruiser includes a “curated selection of appliances” such as an indoor and outdoor shower, flat pack toilet and 120V and 12V power outlets.

    Further features include:

    Exterior

    • Exterior recovery gear storage
    • Exterior filtered water access
    • Lockable utility hook-ups
    • Exterior keypad for lighting and system control
    • Exterior scene lights
    • 51-litre freshwater capacity
    • 26-litre grey tank

    Interior

    • Bed with underbed storage
    • Interior filtered and unfiltered water

    • Dimmable interior lighting
    • 460Ah lithium 12V battery
    • 1500W inverter
    • Integrated storage drawers and cabinets
    • Onboard 12V water heater

No mention is made of the Hummer’s powertrain however, indicating the vehicle’s battery and electric motors remain unmodified.

The GMC Hummer EV is currently offered in EV3X and Edition 1 guises, both featuring tri-motor all-wheel drive powertrains.

The EV3X produces up to 745kW and has a claimed range of 613km, while the Edition 1 has 529km of range.

Suspension remains unchanged, with GMC noting “the Hummer EV’s Air Ride Adaptive Suspension [provides] a comfortable night’s sleep on all terrains”.

GMC says it won’t cover the upfit package with its manufacturer warranty. The package can only be bought through EarthCruiser, and will be available in 2024.

EarthCruiser is an overlanding upfit manufacturer originally founded in Australia in 2009. The company is now based in Oregon and has traditionally specialised in producing upfit packages for 4×4 trucks.

It started working on the modified Hummer in March this year.

Currently GMC and EarthCruiser’s Hummer package is unique in the overlanding upfit industry in featuring an electric powertrain.
