Interested in a Toyota HiLux?

The facelifted 2024 Toyota HiLux is now on sale in Australia, bringing a new look for certain variants, a handful of new features and 48-volt technology in select examples – just don’t call it a hybrid.

Pricing has changed for about half of the Toyota HiLux range for 2024, owing to minor specification changes or the arrival of its ‘V-Active’ 48-volt mild-hybrid system, reserved for just five dual-cab 4×4 models.

The range still opens at $26,475 before on-road costs but now stretches to $74,310 before on-road costs for the flagship HiLux GR Sport.

Toyota HiLux Workmate variants score a black honeycomb mesh grille, plus black lower and body-coloured side bumper finishes, while single-cab chassis and petrol dual-cab variants across the range have a dark grey front bumper.

There’s a silver lower bumper finish on the HiLux SR, which also gains a tailgate damper with lift assist on pickup grades.

The SR5 has been tweaked with a black upper grille mould, darkened headlight clusters, and a gloss black finish for the fog light bezels, exterior mirrors and door handles.

More details on the 2024 Toyota HiLux range are available below.

    Drivetrains

There are now four engines in the Toyota HiLux range.

Entry-level Workmate versions of the ute are powered by a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 122kW/245Nm and mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. It’s rear-drive only.

The Workmate’s base turbo-diesel engine is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder, with 110kW/400Nm. This can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, and rear- or four-wheel drive.

As standard, the HiLux SR and SR5 are powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, with 150kW and 500Nm in six-speed auto guise, or 420Nm when mated to a six-speed manual. This engine can be paired with a rear- or four-wheel drive layout.

HiLux GR Sport variants benefit from a power and torque bump to 165kW and 550Nm, and it is auto-only.

The new V-Active mild-hybrid system adds a motor generator, 48V battery, and DC/DC converter to both versions of the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel, though its outputs are unchanged. This is exclusively available in four-wheel drive and automatic guise.

    Efficiency

Fuel economy figures for the HiLux range are as follows:

    • Petrol manual: 10.7-11.1 litres per 100km
    • Petrol auto: 10.4-10.9 litres per 100km
    • 2.4TD manual: 6.9-7.4 litres per 100km
    • 2.4TD auto: 7.5-8.0 litres per 100km
    • 2.8TD manual: 7.1-8.0 litres per 100km
    • 2.8TD auto: 7.5-8.1 litres per 100km

Toyota is yet to release fuel consumption figures for V-Active engines.

    Dimensions

The Toyota HiLux’s dimensions vary greatly, depending on which body and variant is ordered.

All versions run on a 3085mm wheelbase, and ground clearance is measured at 216mm for all bar 4×2 models with the base petrol engine (174mm) and the GR Sport (265mm).

HiLux pickups are 5325mm long (excluding the 5330mm Workmate Double Cab and 5320mm Rogue) and 1855mm wide (except the Single Cab and Workmate 4×2 Double Cab which are 1800mm, plus the Rogue and GR Sport at 2020mm).

Braked towing capacity is 2500kg for petrol models, 2800kg for 4×2 diesels, and 3500kg for all 4×4 models.

Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) again depends on the HiLux variant, rated between 2700kg and 3100kg.

Approach angle is 29 degrees for all models bar base 4×2 petrol models (23 degrees) and the GR Sport (30 degrees), while departure angle is between 20 and 27 degrees.

Wading depth is rated at 700mm, and the fuel tank is 80 litres.
