Interested in a Toyota HiLux?

Toyota has released pricing for HiLux models with its new 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which it’s calling V-Active Technology.

They’ll go on sale in March.

While Toyota hasn’t released pricing for the entire updated 2024 HiLux lineup, it says models with V-Active Technology cost between $590 to $1605 more than corresponding models without.

The technology is available only on automatic double-cab 4×4 models, with just five variants receiving it: the SR and SR5 in both cab-chassis and pickup guise, and the Rogue pickup.

SR variants see the biggest price increases at $1025 for the cab-chassis and $1605 for the pickup, but in opting for the V-Active system in this trim level means buyers also receive dual-zone climate control, auto up/down windows, and keyless entry and start.

All dual-cab 4×4 auto SR5 models will come with the V-Active system as standard, and these also receive a wireless phone charger and two USB-C outlets in the rear of the cabin. Other SR5 models stick with the existing 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four.

The Rogue will come exclusively with V-Active, and also gains a wireless phone charger and rear USB-C ports.

Beyond the introduction of the mild-hybrid system, there’s refreshed front-end styling across the range.

All 2024 HiLux pickup variants now have a tailgate damper with lift assist, consisting of a gas strut and steel cable, which replaces the existing steel bracket.

All automatic SR pickup models also gain front and rear parking sensors.

    Pricing

    • 2024 Toyota HiLux SR double-cab chassis 4×4 V-Active Technology: $54,130
    • 2024 Toyota HiLux SR double-cab pickup 4×4 V-Active Technology: $56,210
    • 2024 Toyota HiLux SR5 double-cab chassis 4×4 V-Active Technology: $60,580
    • 2024 Toyota HiLux SR5 double-cab pickup 4×4 V-Active Technology: $63,260
    • 2024 Toyota HiLux Rogue double-cab pickup 4×4 V-Active Technology: $71,530

    All prices exclude on-road costs.

    Drivetrains

The V-Active system comprises a motor generator, 48-volt battery and DC/DC converter, and is paired with the familiar 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.

However, Toyota Australia hasn’t confirmed outputs for the mild-hybrid powertrain. The regular 2.8-litre produces 150kW and 500Nm.

Automatic stop/start is standard, and the motor generator can recover energy during deceleration which is fed back into the battery. Energy stored in the battery can then be used to provide additional power when accelerating.

Models with the V-Active system also gain Toyota’s Multi-Terrain off-road system. In high range, you can select between Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud and Deep Snow modes, while in low range you can choose between Auto, Sand, Mud and Rock.

Toyota says the motor generator unit has been positioned high in the engine bay “to allow for successful and safe water crossings”.

    Efficiency

Toyota Australia claims the system improves refinement and can provide an improvement of approximately 6-10 per cent in fuel economy.

It hasn’t provided fuel economy figures but, for reference, HiLux models with the 2.8-litre engine and automatic transmission currently use between 7.5 and 8.1 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.

    Dimensions

The Toyota HiLux’s measurements are dependent on which variant you choose.

The Rogue measures 5320mm long, while other double-cab pickup models measure between 5325mm and 5330mm long.

    All double-cab models ride a 3085mm wheelbase.

Height is between 1750 and 1870mm long, while width is between 1800 and 1855mm on all bar the Rogue which is 2020mm wide.

    Servicing and Warranty

All Toyota HiLux models are backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Toyota Australia hasn’t published service pricing for models with V-Active Technology.

    Safety

The Toyota HiLux wears a five-star ANCAP rating for vehicles sold from July 2019 onwards, scoring 96 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupants, 88 per cent for vulnerable road users and 78 per cent for safety assist.
