The 2024 Tesla Model Y has received price cuts in Australia, coinciding with small design changes for the hot-selling electric SUV.
UPDATE, 23/04/2024 – Tesla has once again decreased the price of the Model Y, with $3000 cuts on top of the already reduced price tags announced earlier this month. We’ve updated this article to reflect the changes.
Now priced from $60,900 before on-road costs, the $4500 price cuts to the base Model Y throughout April makes it the cheapest the electric SUV has ever been in Australia.
The mid-level Model Y Long Range’s price has been reduced by $8500 this month to $69,900 before on-road costs, while the flagship Model Y Performance starts from $82,900 before on-roads – receiving a singular $8500 reduction.
Headlining the Tesla Model Y’s changes for 2024 are a new black ‘Gemini’ wheel cover design for the base and Long Range variants, plus three new optional exterior colours.
Unfortunately Australia will miss out on a majority of the updates to the Chinese-delivered Model Y – despite being built in the same Shanghai factory – such as greater driving range, RGB interior ambient lighting and a textile dashboard material.
A full update to the Tesla Model Y – codenamed Juniper – is reportedly due next year, bringing upgrades similar to the recent Model 3 ‘Highland’ facelift.
If you order a Model Y today, Tesla says you can take delivery between April and June 2024.
The Model Y’s price cuts come just days after MG cut the prices of its electric vehicles (EVs) in Australia, with GWM handing down a price cut to the Ora earlier today to make it the cheapest battery-powered car on sale locally.

Drivetrains
While Tesla Australia doesn’t officially quote power outputs for the Model Y, Glass’s Guide quotes the Model Y RWD’s single electric motor as producing 220kW of power and 330Nm of torque. The Model Y RWD can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds.
The Tesla Model Y Long Range gains a front electric motor for an all-wheel drive layout, developing 378kW of power and 493Nm of torque. The Model Y Long Range has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.0 seconds.
Tesla’s flagship Model Y Performance receives another bump with total outputs of 393kW and 639Nm. Tesla quotes a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds.
Efficiency
Tesla Australia claims the Model Y RWD has 455km of driving range, based on the WLTP laboratory test cycle. The Long Range AWD has a quoted driving range of 533km, while the Performance drops to a 514km claim.
The Tesla Model Y range features a lithium-ion battery, though the brand doesn’t disclose battery capacity.
While the Tesla Model Y RWD can charge at up to 170kW on a DC fast charger, both the Long Range AWD and Performance can accept up to 250kW.
Dimensions
The Tesla Model Y measures 4751mm long, 2129mm wide (or 1978mm with folded mirrors) and 1624mm tall, on a 2890mm wheelbase.
The Model Y RWD weighs 1909kg, while the Long Range tips the scales at 1979kg while the Performance is heavier again at 1997kg.
Boot space is claimed at 854 litres with the rear seats up and including the ‘frunk’, increasing to 2158 litres with the second-row seats folded.
Servicing and Warranty
The Tesla Model Y is covered by a four-year, 80,000km warranty in Australia.
The Model Y RWD’s battery is backed by an eight-year or 160,000km warranty, whichever comes first. The Model Y Long Range and Performance batteries are covered for eight years or 192,000km.
During the warranty period, Tesla Australia guarantees the battery will retain a minimum of 70 per cent capacity.
Safety
The Tesla Model Y received a five-star ANCAP safety rating in 2022, based on tests conducted by Euro NCAP.
It scored 97 per cent for adult occupant protection, 89 per cent for child occupant protection, 82 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 98 per cent for safety assist.
