Our spy photographers have spotted plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and internal-combustion (ICE) versions of the upcoming G60 BMW 5 Series in Munich.

Design-wise, the PHEV version does not differ from the ICE version, with it featuring a more coupe-like, fastback shape over the current model 5 Series.

Many of its features are still heavily camouflaged at this stage, but there are flush-fitting door handles.

The photographers caught a quick glimpse at the interior of the prototype and saw it had the same curved dash as other new BMW models.

BMW has now started road testing of the upcoming 5 Series, which means we should be seeing 5 Series prototypes more often.

Details are still hazy around the upcoming model, given it’s a long way from its launch.

Along with the ICE and PHEV versions, the 5 Series range is also expected to be joined by an all-electric version, tentatively named the i5.

This all-electric version will be joining the likes of the BMW i3 hatch, the i4 sedan, the iX3 SUV, and the upcoming iX SUV in its ever-growing all-electric lineup.

It will also compete against the Tesla Model S, upcoming Audi A6 e-tron and the recently announced Mercedes-Benz EQE.

It could also share a powertrain with its BMW iX sibling. In xDrive40 guise, the iX has two electric motors that produce a total system output of 385kW of power and 765Nm of torque.

The current-generation BMW 5 Series has been on sale since 2016 and was facelifted in 2020. This new-generation model isn’t expect to debut until 2024.
