Toyota Australia is recalling 156,838 HiLux utes due to a problem with the licence plate bracket.
“On certain Toyota HiLux vehicles equipped with a genuine LPB [licence plate bracket], due to insufficient stiffness of the LPB, there is a possibility that when the vehicle is being driven on rough or corrugated roads the LPB could be damaged as a result of the vibrations,” the company says in its recall notice.
“In this condition, the LPB may fracture, causing the Licence Plate lamp wiring to become damaged, resulting in loss of Licence Plate illumination.”
“In the worst case, the Licence Plate may dislodge resulting in an increase to the risk of injury to other road users.”
If your vehicle is affected, you may notice a rattle when driving over rough roads.

Toyota is contacting all affected owners.
Even if your HiLux is fitted with a non-genuine tray body, the tray builder may still have used the Toyota licence plate bracket.
If you own an affected vehicle, you’ll need to schedule an appointment at a Toyota dealership for a free inspection and repair.
Toyota says the work will take approximately 30 minutes, however you may need to make your vehicle available for longer depending on the dealer’s work schedule.
If you have any further questions, you can contact the Toyota Recall Campaign Helpline weekdays from 8am to 6pm AEDT on 1800 987 366.
