Who knew a 1999 Toyota Camry could go so fast 25 years after it rolled off the production line?
On Thursday, August 1, an 18-year-old driver on a Provisional 1 licence (red P-plates) was clocked by Tuggerah Lakes Highway Patrol officers allegedly travelling at 192km/h in a 50km/h residential zone in Woongarrah.
Police allege the Hamlyn Terrace man said upon being pulled over that he “had a rough week at work” and “was just blowing off some steam”.

His licence was immediately suspended, and he was issued with a court attendance notice for driving at a dangerous speed and exceeding the speed limit by over 45km/h.
For the latter offence alone, he’s looking at a $2959 fine and six months off the road.
Police note he was pulled over less than 2km from the site of a recent fatal collision, where speeding was believed to be the cause.

The driver was behind the wheel of a 1999 Camry Conquest V6, which is understood to have a top speed of more than 200km/h.
The 3.0-litre naturally aspirated V6 produces 141kW of power and 279Nm of torque, and has a 0-100km/h time of 7.8 seconds with the standard five-speed manual or 9.2 seconds with the four-speed automatic.
However, that 0-100km/h claim is best tested on a drag strip… not on a suburban street!
