Chery Stockman petrol PHEV to be outpunched by Jetour F700 ute

The Chery Stockman dual-cab ute is getting a petrol plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain in 2027, but it won't be as powerful as another Chery Group ute launched in China that's also bound for Australia.

Chery has announced the Stockman – a rival to the BYD Shark 6, Ford Ranger Hybrid and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV utes – will be launched in Australia with a diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain by the end of 2026.

A second PHEV powertrain, this one using a petrol engine, is planned for the Stockman in 2027.

In the same year, the Jetour F700 is expected to be introduced to the Australian market as one of the first models from this Chery Group brand.

In China, the F700 is offered with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor on the front axle and a second electric motor on the rear axle, using an 800V electrical architecture.

This gives the F700 combined outputs of 665kW and 1135Nm, substantially more than the BYD Shark 6 Performance’s 350kW and 700Nm, and the Ford Ranger Hybrid’s 207kW and 697Nm.

That also means it produces more power and torque than the Stockman petrol PHEV, which has been confirmed by Chery to produce 395kW and 1000Nm.

Jetour claims the F700 can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.0 seconds, while its 34.13kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides an electric-only driving range of around 150km on the more generous CLTC test cycle. The Stockman is set to use the same battery in both petrol and diesel PHEV configurations.

Official fuel consumption for the F700 in China is 7.95L/100km with the battery depleted, with a claimed total driving range of 1300km.

For context, the diesel Stockman will use a 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain producing combined outputs of 350kW and 800Nm, and offer “up to 100km” of electric-only driving range under the NEDC test cycle.

Both the F700 and Stockman use a ladder-frame chassis, with the F700 offering a claimed 900mm wading depth, a 32-degree approach angle and a 15-degree departure angle.

The Stockman will use double-wishbone front suspension and a live rear axle with either coil springs in the petrol PHEV or leaf springs in the diesel PHEV. In the latter, Chery says the Stockman will offer a payload of up to 1000kg.

The F700 is marginally larger than the Stockman, with its wheelbase stretched by 100mm to 3350mm. It measures 5495mm long, 2050mm wide and 1985mm tall, up 45mm, 40mm and 95mm, respectively, on the Stockman.

Chery Australia has confirmed the Stockman will undergo local testing and validation by Melbourne-based engineering firm Premcar, which has carried out development work on multiple vehicles, including the Nissan Navara Warrior and Mitsubishi Triton Raider dual-cab utes.

It's unclear at this stage whether Jetour will conduct any local chassis tuning work.

In China, the Jetour F700 is priced at launch from ¥299,900 (A$62,573), making it more expensive than the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV in its domestic market. The latter is priced from ¥228,800 (A$47,738) in China and $52,990 drive-away in Australia.

Chery has yet to announce local pricing for the Stockman, which will be the brand's first ute in Australia.

Jetour, one of a sprawling range of Chery-owned automotive brands, has been confirmed for launch in Australia in 2027, with the F700 expected to be among its first models on sale here.
