The Porsche 911 has always been pitched as an everyday sports car, with its rear seats and handy front boot. But a practical camper? That’s a new one.
Porsche Tequipment, which builds accessories for the whole Porsche range, is offering a new roof tent for its range – including the 911 sports car.
It’s coming to Australia as a special order part of the Tequipment catalogue, although you’ll have to wait until November if you order one now.
The tent sits on roof racks, and measures 2580mm long, 2570mm wide, and 1180mm tall.
That makes it bigger than a queen bed inside, although the maximum 140kg stationary load means you’ll need to be wary of letting two heavy-set campers hop aboard at the same time if it’s mounted to a 911, Taycan, or Cayenne Coupe.
The maximum stationary load in the Taycan Cross Turismo, Macan, and Cayenne is 190kg, leaving a little more headroom.
You’ll be speed limited to 130km/h with the tent mounted, so lapping the Nordschleife at full tilt and then camping in the parking lot is out of the question.
When it’s not in use, the pop-top camper folds down into a slimline hard case designed in Weissach. When owners arrive at the camp site, the tent can be erected by unlocking a pair of tabs and lifting the lid – with assistance from a pair of gas struts, naturally.
The floor is supported by a pair of “integrated telescopic ladders”, and the tent body is tensioned using four rods.
With an integrated skylight, dual zip up windows, and fly screens all around, you can stargaze from the roof of your 911 without having to fight off mosquitos or common folk.
Porsche Tequipment will sell you a tent liner to help keep warm in chilly conditions, a thermal blanket, and a shoe liner.
The price for the tent is available “On Request” for Australia, but in Europe it’s priced at €4980 (A$7370).
