GAC S7 heading to Australia as Kia Sorento PHEV rival

The GAC S7 is set to be launched in Australia as a new flagship plug-in hybrid (PHEV) large SUV for the newcomer Chinese brand, sitting at the top of its local lineup alongside the M8 PHEV people mover.

First previewed locally in left-hand drive guise at an event in November 2025 and on display at this week's Everything Electric show in Sydney, the S7 has now been confirmed for global right-hand drive production during the second half of 2027.

GAC Australia hasn’t provided any further word on when it’ll arrive in local showrooms, and has left itself a bit of wriggle room by saying it's "looking to add" the vehicle and referring to a "potential" future debut.

The company says the large crossover SUV features a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with 170kW/220Nm front and 80kW/250Nm rear electric motors.

It uses a 36.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, giving it electric range of 150km on the NEDC cycle, with combined range of up to 1020km on the CLTC cycle.

There are single-motor front-wheel drive variants in China with a smaller 21.3kWh battery, though it appears GAC is only planning to bring the dual-motor all-wheel drive PHEV powertrain and larger battery here.

Like the Geely Monjaro due here in 2027, the GAC S7 is another large Chinese crossover SUV with a five-seat configuration. However, it’s closer in size to the Toyota Kluger, measuring 4900mm long, 1950mm wide and 1780mm tall on a 2880mm wheelbase.

It features MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, and rides on either 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels.

GAC hasn’t provided any indication of Australian pricing or equipment, though in China the S7 comes standard with a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, 12-speaker Adigo Lite sound system, heated steering wheel, and heated, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats.

A full suite of active safety and driver assist technology is offered, and includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, a surround-view camera with a transparent chassis mode, and front and rear cross-traffic assist.

Some variants include additional equipment such as ambient lighting, a 22-speaker Adigo Pro sound system, and a 17.3-inch 3K rear screen.

The S7 entered production in China in 2025, where it’s sold under GAC’s Trumpchi brand.

In Australia, GAC sells vehicles from its parent company’s various brands under the one GAC banner. That includes models from Trumpchi (the Emzoom and M8) and Aion (Aion UT and Aion V).

GAC has also used Everything Electric to preview a range of new accessories for the Aion UT and Aion V.
