Australian company Carbon Revolution has landed a key supply deal with Ford, which will offer its lightweight wheels as an option on the high-performance 2024 Mustang Dark Horse revealed this week in Detroit.
The new Dark Horse nameplate, revealed this week alongside the rest of the new-gen Mustang range, is billed as “the most track-capable… street-legal Mustang ever”.
It’s the first new performance name for the brand since Mustang Bullitt was introduced in 2001, and will be sold in both North America and Australia.
“This will be the first time that Carbon Revolution will supply a core vehicle program at Ford, allowing a wider adoption of the Company’s lightweight wheel technology,” the Victorian company said in a statement.
The two companies have an existing relationship, with Ford using Carbon Revolution wheels on the lower-volume Shelby GT350 and GT500 Mustang models.
The Mustang Dark Horse has a modified version of the regular naturally aspirated V8 with a target 500hp (368kW), an available six-speed Tremec manual gearbox with titanium ball shifter, larger rear sway bars, heavy-duty front shocks, MagneRide dampers, a Torsen LSD, Brembo brakes, and Pirelli P Zero tyres.
An optional Handling Package adds a unique rear wing similar to the Ford GT’s, stiffer springs, larger front and rear sway bars, and wider Pirelli Trofeo tyres. The Carbon Revolution wheels are being billed as a further option for “no compromise track performance”.
Ford hasn’t announced pricing yet.
Carbon Revolution says it expects to commence production of the Dark Horse wheels at its new ‘Mega-line’ in late FY23. Its new Geelong production line is designed to grow the company’s capacity from 80,000 wheels to 155,000 wheels per year.
The company says its wheels are up to 50 per cent lighter than aluminium wheels, but just as strong.
It supplies the high-end wheels to other OEMs such as Ferrari (488 Pista, F8 Tributo, F8 Spider, SF90 Stradale, 812 Competizione, 296 GTS, 296 GTB), GM (Chevrolet Corvette Z06), and Renault (Megane RS Trophy R).
