Jaguar calls hybrid rumours 'rubbish', doubles down on EV-only future

Luxury brand Jaguar has denied reports it’s set to introduce new models packing a petrol engine, saying it remains fully committed to an all-electric future and that suggestions to the contrary are “rubbish”.

The Sunday Times published a report on January 24, 2026, claiming the Indian-owned British automaker is exploring the inclusion of extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrains which incorporate internal combustion engines (ICE).

Such a move would represent a significant strategy shift after Jaguar’s 2024 announcement it would stop making ICE-powered vehicles, announcing it would pause production entirely as part of its transition to a more upmarket, electric-vehicle-only brand.

However, the automaker has denied any plans to introduce hybrids, telling Autocar it remains committed to its all-electric future.

“Our plans to reinvent Jaguar as an electric-only luxury automotive brand are unchanged,” a Jaguar spokesperson told Autocar.

“Last month, prototype passenger rides received overwhelmingly positive reactions from global media, and we are looking forward to unveiling the first new electric Jaguar later this year.”

A production version of the Type 00 concept car will spearhead the brand’s electric renaissance. The boldly styled 1000hp (746kW) four-door GT formed part of Jaguar’s controversial rebrand in 2024, which included a new logo.

While the production version of the Type 00 is due to be unveiled later this year, timing for Australian showroom arrivals is yet to be confirmed.

The move comes as Jaguar positions itself as a more exclusive, upmarket all-electric competitor to Bentley, rather than its former rivals BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

The last petrol-powered Jaguar, a black F-Pace SVR, was completed at the company’s Solihull plant in England in December 2025.

Jaguar’s firm commitment to EVs contrasts with several other brands, including Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, which have wound back previous timelines to sell only electric vehicles.

Volvo Australia, for example, had committed to selling EVs exclusively by 2026, ahead of its global target of 2030. This plan has since been revised amid slower-than-expected EV uptake and strong demand for hybrid vehicles in key markets including ours, as well as North America.

The Chinese-owned Swedish brand has confirmed it will continue offering hybrid models globally beyond 2030, rather than transitioning to an EV-only lineup.
