Ford Transit Custom and Tourneo recalled due to toxic gas leak

Almost 8000 Transit Custom vans and Tourneo people movers have been recalled for a gas leak, following a recall of almost 300 E-Transit electric vans earlier this year for the same issue.

Ford Australia has issued a recall for the Ford Transit Customvan and Ford Tourneopeople mover due to a battery-related issue.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the 12-volt battery vent may not operate as intended. As a result, under certain driving conditions such as high temperatures toxic gases may leak into the cabin,” the company says in its recall notice.

“Occupants may experience a hissing sound, smell of acid or rotten eggs, a visible gas leak and/or heat in seat.

“If toxic gases leak into the cabin, it may affect the health of vehicle occupants increasing the risk of serious injury.”

It’s the same issue that saw 278 examples of the Ford E-Transit electric van, produced between 2021 and 2025, recalled in October 2025.

While the recall has been issued, the wording suggests a repair is not yet available.

“When a repair procedure is available, owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Ford Motor Company Australia asking them to contact their local dealership to have their vehicle rectified, free of charge,” the recall said.

Owners of affected vehicles can contact Ford on 133 673 or their local Ford dealer for further information.
