Drunk driver on naughty list after taking Christmas car for a spin on footpath

A South Australian motorist who got into the Christmas spirits a bit too early will face court after allegedly driving in pedestrian-only areas while drunk.

On Sunday, November 24, police officers from South Australia’s Western District attended Adelaide’s Henley Square at approximately 8:20pm, following numerous reports of a car being driven on the footpath and a restricted area for pedestrians only.

Upon arrival, police found a Mazda 323 which was covered in Christmas lights and ornaments, with a 65-year-old man driving it.

The driver said he had taken a wrong turn, however a roadside breath test subsequently returned a result of 0.071 – above the legal limit of 0.05 for fully licensed drivers in the state.

He will face charges in court for drink driving and driving in a dangerous manner, while his Mazda 323 was both defected and impounded for 28 days.

In South Australia, those who return a blood-alcohol concentration above 0.05 but below 0.08 face fines of $849 and four demerit points.
