2027 Volvo XC40, EX40, EC40 facelifts revealed

The Volvo 40 Series (XC40, EX40 and EC40) have been given another facelift as the long-lived model range celebrates its ninth birthday.

All three sport a new front end with a resculpted bonnet, new fenders, a flatter grille, and a cleaner front bumper, especially around the lower air intake.

There's a new set of headlights, which sport a new interpretation of Volvo's Thor's hammer lighting signature and matrix LED technology.

Out the back the XC40 and EX40 feature redesigned bumpers and tail-lights, with many parts of the hockey-stick units blacked out or tinted. These two SUVs also have a new tailgate with straighter cut and sharper creases, while the EC40's derriere remains untouched.

A selection of new diamond-cut 18-, 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels are available across the range. 

On the inside the major change is the larger 11.2-inch touchscreen. The infotainment display, which is the same unit fitted to the larger EX60, now sticks out from the centre of the dashboard like a tablet on a plinth.

With the infotainment system running on the Android Automotive operating system, it comes equipped with the Gemini AI voice assistant that is able engage in conversation and suggest destinations.

Unlike the smaller EX30, the XC40/EX40/EC40 still feature a strip of physical controls on the lower dashboard for the sound system and demisters, as well as physical buttons on the steering wheel spokes. Other upgrades to the interior include new upholstery options and revised cabin lighting. 

As far as safety goes, there's an upgraded suite of cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors, as well as a new safety computer and software. New available features include lane change assistance, a 360-degree camera system with a 3D view, and alerts to warn passengers if they're about to open their door into traffic or cyclists.

The XC40 is available solely as a mild hybrid with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels via an automated seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In the B3 variant the drivetrain is tuned to deliver 120kW and 265Nm, while the B4 model generates 245kW and 300Nm.

Local versions of the existing XC40 are available with the B4 drivetrain, in both front- and all-wheel drive flavours, the latter of which seems to be deleted from the facelifted range.

Meanwhile the EX40 is available globally with the choice of six drivetrain and battery combos, all which have adopted the naming structure introduced with the EX60.

The current EX40 is available in Australia in Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor forms, which line up with the P5 Long Range and P8 AWD in the revised nomenclature.
