2027 GWM Cannon Hi4-T becomes Australia's cheapest PHEV ute

GWM Australia has confirmed pricing for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Cannon Hi4-T ute, undercutting all other PHEV utes on the Australian market with a starting price of $50,990 drive-away and further discounts available.

The Hi4-T powertrain's addition to the Cannon brings PHEV technology further down GWM's off-road ute range, following the launch of the larger Cannon Alpha Hi4-T in May 2025. It also joins the Tank 300 and Tank 500 PHEVs in local showrooms.

Available in two variants, the Cannon Hi4-T costs $50,990 or $54,990 drive-away for private buyers, dropping to $49,990 or $53,990 drive-away for ABN holders. However, in typical GWM fashion, there are discounts in place for the ute's launch.

Until October 31, 2026, both private and ABN buyers can choose either a $2000 fuel card or a 'driveaway bonus' that takes $2000 off the purchase price. That means the Cannon Hi4-T can currently be had for as little as $47,990 drive-away.

Regardless, the Cannon Hi4-T's typical starting price is cheaper than all PHEV utes currently on sale. The closest alternative is the JAC Hunter PHEV priced at $49,988 before on-road costs, or an estimated drive-away price of $53,905 for a NSW postcode.

With the addition of the Cannon Hi4-T, GWM is now the only brand in Australia currently fielding two PHEV utes. It follows the launch of new turbo-diesel powertrains for the Cannon Alpha and Tank 500.

Like other GWM Hi4-T models, the Cannon PHEV is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated with one electric motor and a 33.1kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack.

GWM quotes peak power and torque outputs of 310kW and 750Nm, sent to a mechanical four-wheel-drive system through a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission. Claimed fuel consumption is as low as 2.4L/100km, while maximum electric-only driving range is quoted at 115km based on the more lenient NEDC test.

Importantly, the Cannon Hi4-T retains the segment's benchmark braked towing capacity of 3500kg with a towing drive mode to suit. This comes in addition to a low-range transfer case and five all-terrain drive modes.

Vehicle-to-load functionality is standard, as is a selection of 230V power outlets in the tub. GWM says the PHEV battery can be charged at up to 110kW, providing a 30-to-80 per cent charging time of 18 minutes.

Inside, the Cannon Hi4-T features a new 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, along with a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Other standard features include synthetic leather upholstery, powered driver's seat adjustment, and a wireless phone charger, while the top-spec Ultra gains a sunroof, a heated steering wheel, and heated, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats.

Outside, the Cannon Hi4-T rides on 18-inch black alloy wheels and has a plethora of black accents. There are LED headlights and tail-lights, a spray-in tub liner, and a full-size steel spare wheel mounted under the vehicle's rear.

A full suite of safety gear is standard, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and rear parking sensors. The Ultra adds a surround-view monitor and front parking sensors.

The GWM Cannon Hi4-T is expected to arrive in Australian showrooms in mid-October 2026, and pre-orders are now open.
