Interested in a Mahindra Scorpio?

The Mahindra Scorpio has entered 2024 unchanged, but there are key updates due later in the year.

The mid-sized, body-on-frame, three-row SUV was added to Mahindra’s local lineup in early 2023, and is a smaller alternative to the likes of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Isuzu MU-X and Toyota Fortuner, while also battling the GWM Tank 300.

The two-strong Scorpio range starts at $41,990 drive-away for the Scorpio Z8, and extends to $45,990 drive-away for the Scorpio Z8L.

All Scorpio models in Australia have six seats, with a 2+2+2 seating arrangement featuring second-row captain’s chairs.

Mahindra has plans to introduce more safety equipment to its Scorpio range. CarExpert understands an updated model is set to arrive in the second half of 2024.

“We at Mahindra are committed to our promise of safety and are working towards meeting unique safety regulations and these requirements for Australia as part of our product mid-cycle update,” said a company spokesperson late last year.

This latest third-generation model is referred to as Scorpio-N in other markets, though Mahindra Australia has stuck with calling it the Scorpio locally as there has never been any version of it sold to date locally.

    Pricing

    • 2024 Mahindra Scorpio Z8: $41,990
    • 2024 Mahindra Scorpio Z8L: $45,990

    All prices are drive-away.

    Drivetrain

The 2024 Mahindra Scorpio range is powered by a Euro 6b-compliant 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 129kW of power and 400Nm of torque.

This is mated to an Aisin-sourced six-speed automatic transmission with drive sent through a shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system with low-range.

In addition to a mechanical locking rear differential and a brake-locking differential, there are Normal, Snow, Mud & Ruts, and Sand drive modes.

    Efficiency

Mahindra claims the Scorpio uses 7.2L per 100km on the combined cycle.

The Scorpio has a 57L diesel fuel tank and requires AdBlue. It also has an idle stop-start system.

    Dimensions

The Mahindra Scorpio measures in at 4662mm long, 1917mm wide, and 1857mm tall with a 2750mm wheelbase.

It has a maximum braked towing capacity of 2500kg, and an unbraked towing capacity of 750kg.

Kerb weight depends on the variant but is around 2100kg for both, with payload between 510kg and 525kg.

Gross vehicle mass (GVM) for the Scorpio is 2610kg, and gross combination mass (GCM) is 5155kg.

The Scorpio has 227mm of ground clearance, an approach angle of 27.2 degrees, a breakover angle of 23.5 degrees, and a departure angle of 21.3 degrees.

Mahindra hasn’t quoted boot capacities for the Scorpio, but all models have six seats.

    Servicing and Warranty

The Mahindra Scorpio is the first model to be covered by the brand’s factory-backed seven-year/150,000km warranty and seven years roadside assistance for private buyers.

Logbook servicing is required every 12 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first. Pricing for the first six services are capped at the following:

    3 months/3000kmFree
    12 months/10,000km$460
    24 months/20,000km$370
    36 months/30,000km$450
    48 months/40,000km$728
    60 months/50,000km$350

    Safety

The Mahindra Scorpio scored a zero-star safety rating from ANCAP, based on testing conducted in 2023.

It scored 44 per cent for adult occupant protection, 80 per cent for child occupant protection, 23 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 0 per cent for safety assist.

It’s the only vehicle in its segment to lack autonomous emergency braking, which it’ll need to receive by March 1, 2025 in order to remain on sale in Australia. It also lacks other active safety technology common in rivals, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
