BMW‘s upcoming high-performance M5 is expected to get a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and has been spied testing with a production-ready body.
It’s expected to be revealed in 2023.
Unlike previously spied prototypes, this 2024 BMW M5 prototype no longer looks like a dressed-up next-generation 5 Series sedan with tacked-on wheel arch flares, and instead receives proper ones creating a muscular stance.
There’s also less camouflage, which allows us to get a better look at the M5’s front fascia.
The new M5 will be a plug-in hybrid as BMW’s M division embraces electrification. The upcoming M2 will be the last new M car with no electric assistance.
Power is expected to come from a version of the plug-in hybrid setup that will debut in the XM SUV.
It comes with a new V8 engine mated with an electric motor, producing total system outputs of 480kW of power and 800Nm of torque. Claimed all-electric range is 80km according to WLTP testing.
The current M5 uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 460kW and 750Nm.
The BMW XM has a hybrid-specific M xDrive all-wheel drive system which includes an electronic rear differential lock in the rear axle transmission.
It also features an active anti-roll system, although it’s not clear if the lower-riding M5 will require the same tech.
The new M5 will compete against the Mercedes-AMG E63, Audi RS6 and RS7, and Porsche Panamera.
Up front, the signature kidney grille is still relatively small compared to the M3 and M4, and has an insert with thin strakes similar to those of the M4 CSL.
There’s a large air intake at the bottom of the front bumper, as well as air ducts for the brakes in the corners.
The prototype wears gloss black alloy wheels behind which sit large cross-drilled brakes.
The M5’s expected PHEV powertrain is confirmed by the presence of ‘Electrified Vehicle’ stickers plus a visible charging flap at the back of the front wheel arch.
Down back there’s a subtle boot lip spoiler, as well as a bulging rear bumper that houses a diffuser and quad exhaust outlets.
Previous 5 Series spied prototype
Although there are seemingly production-ready LED headlights on this spied M5 prototype, the tail lights are prototype units.
Our previous spy photos have revealed the cabin of the next 5er will feature BMW’s new Curved Display, which incorporates the digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen in one assembly.
BMW has been progressively rolling this design element out across its range.
As recently reported, Bimmerpost forum member ynguldyn, who claims to compile future product information from leaks within BMW, says the next M5 will also be available in a Touring wagon body style.
The sedan, codenamed G90, will reportedly enter production in July 2024, with the G99 Touring following in November.
The new M5 models should launch after the core 5 Series range, which will reportedly enter production in July 2023 in sedan guise and March 2024 in Touring guise.

The Bimmerpost user said the 5 Series will offer a range of petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains, with the latter wearing the i5 name.
Level 3 autonomous driving technology will also reportedly be introduced in 2024.
The all-electric BMW i5 will compete against the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz EQE sedans, as well as the upcoming Audi A6 e-tron.
