Ferrari is gearing up for a new era with its first-ever SUV, dubbed the Purosangue – Italian for pure-blooded or thoroughbred.

Gone is the Maserati Levante test mule body our spy photographers have previously snapped, with the ‘Ferrari Utility Vehicle’ now being tested in its production body ahead of an expected reveal in 2022.

The prototype is still wearing heavy camouflage but this is the first time that we’ve been able to see the actual size and proportions of the upcoming Ferrari SUV.

There’s a long bonnet and short overhangs front and rear, with a fairly slinky coupe SUV silhouette. Down back, there are quad exhaust outlets.

The Purosangue will be built on a new front mid-engine architecture that supports 2-, 2+2-, and 4-seat vehicles.

Ferrari says this architecture is optimised for weight distribution and for a low centre of gravity.

In the spy photos our photographer noted the prototype might look small like a Porsche Macan, but it’s actually more comparable in size to the Porsche Cayenne Coupe.

Ferrari has been tight-lipped about the Purosangue but it’s expected power will come from either a V6 or V8, with available hybrid and plug-hybrid variants.

Our spy photographers noted there are flaps on both rear quarter panels, indicating one is for fuel and the other could be for charging.

The new architecture also supports V12 engines.

No matter which engine is used in the Purosangue, it’ll be mated to a dual-clutch transmission that’s located at the rear of the vehicle.

Once it goes on sale its biggest rivals will be the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, Aston Martin DBX, and the Audi RSQ8.

Car Magazine previously reported the Purosangue will be joined by two all-electric SUVs, codenamed F244 and F245, in 2024 and 2026, respectively.
