2021 Volkswagen Amarok W580 Walkinshaw revealed

Volkswagen Australia has announced a market-exclusive top-spec variant of its Amarok V6 utility, dubbed the ‘ultimate GT-spec ute’.

The 2021 Volkswagen Amarok W580 is a collaborative project between the German brand and local tuning firm, Walkinshaw, sporting a range of styling and performance upgrades over the top-spec Amarok V6 on which it’s based.

Pricing will be announced closer to its December 1 on-sale date, but specification highlights are as follows:

• Walkinshaw tuned suspension
• 20 x 9-inch ‘Clayton’ alloy wheels
• Pirelli scorpion 275/50 R20 tyres
• Moulded sports bar painted in body colour
• Unique decals – bonnet & sides
• Wheel arch extensions
• Tuned twin exhaust system
• Walkinshaw grille
• Bi-xenon headlights
• Interior W580 branding including plaque with build number
• LED fog-lights

The Amarok W580 is powered by the top-spec version of its 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel developing a meaty 200kW (up 10kW) and 580Nm, mated as standard to an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive system.

Walkinshaw’s revised suspension setup aims to “maximise grip and boost steering feel”, with overall ride height increased thanks to the larger Pirelli Scorpion tyres and 40mm higher front suspension.

Volkswagen Australia says the Amarok W580 was a 12-month collaboration project with the legendary Australian tuning firm, with additional technical support from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles head office in Hannover, Germany.

“We have always known what a powerhouse we have in the Amarok, but have always felt the range needed a proper GT-spec model. As the originators of the performance ute category, we looked no further than Walkinshaw to achieve this,” said Ryan Davies, Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia.

The Volkswagen Amarok W580 will be available to order in dealers and online from December 1, with first deliveries scheduled from April 2021.

Additionally, the first 30 customers to pre-order an Amarok W580 will receive an all-expenses paid exclusive Walkinshaw experience, including flights, transfers, meals and accommodation to attend a Walkinshaw factory tour and Walkinshaw Andretti United track day.
