Xpeng GX: Zeekr 9X-rivalling flagship SUV confirmed for Australia

Xpeng Australia has confirmed the GX flagship SUV will be offered locally, though it's yet to determine launch timing for its largest SUV, which is set to rival models such as the Zeekr 9X.

Speaking to media including CarExpert at its Melbourne Brand Day event, Xpeng head of international development Alex Tang said the GX would be offered here, with further details still to be determined.

“I can confirm that the GX will come; that that's our flagship now. We just launched in China, and it’s well received by the market, and sales are very, very good,” Mr Tang said.

“Our colleagues in China are fighting for the production, trying to meet the demand, but that car will be our global flagship.”

The GX will arrive after a raft of new models due in Australia over the next six months, starting with an updated G6 SUV and followed by the X9 people mover, L03 small SUV, G9L large SUV and L05 SUV.

Based on Xpeng's SEPA 3.0 Physical AI (artificial intelligence) 800V architecture, the GX is a 5265mm-long SUV, making it longer than a Range Rover Sport. It rides a 3115mm wheelbase, and is offered with a six-seat layout in China.

That makes it bigger than the G9L, which is due here in November 2026 and measures 5120mm long on a 3100mm wheelbase.

In China, the GX is offered as either an electric vehicle (EV) or an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV).

The GX EV starts at ¥279,800 ($59,059), ¥10,000 ($2111) less than the entry-level GX EREV, and is priced similarly to rivals such as the Li Auto L6, which isn't sold in Australia.

GX EREV pricing starts at ¥289,800 ($61,141) for the entry-level model, undercutting rivals such as the Li Auto L8, Aito M8 and Denza N9 in China.

It remains to be seen where it'll be priced in Australia, where Xpeng's priciest vehicle at present is the dual-motor all-wheel drive X9 electric people mover, which tops out at $109,900 before on-road costs, and where the Zeekr 9X could be launched with a base price of around $110-120,000.

In China, the GX EV is offered with a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration across three model grades, which sit below a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) flagship.

Rear-wheel-drive GX EVs use a 270kW/465Nm motor and 91.9kWh battery for a claimed 665km (CLTC) driving range and a 0-100km/h time of 6.97 seconds.

The AWD model adds a 160kW/230Nm front motor for combined outputs of 430kW and 695Nm, delivering a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds. A larger 110kWh battery enables a claimed 750km CLTC driving range.

The EREV uses an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain comprising a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a 63.3kWh battery, producing combined outputs of 370kW and 695Nm and a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.0 seconds.

The same powertrain is used across four EREV model grades offered in China, all featuring standard all-wheel drive, a claimed 430km (CLTC) electric-only driving range and a total combined driving range of 1585km (CLTC) from a 60L fuel tank.

Both EREV and EV GX in China come with Xpeng's ultra-fast charging, with a 10-80 per cent battery top-up achieved in as little as 12 minutes.

The front row features an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 17.3-inch floating centre touchscreen. All variants feature an 8.0-inch control screen in the rear, with a 21.4-inch entertainment display optional.

Nappa leather upholstery is standard across the range, with the heated and ventilated driver's seat featuring 12-way power adjustment. The front passenger seat also includes a heated leg rest.

The second-row captain's chairs are also power adjustable, with folding tables and a 180mm-wide aisle providing access to the third row, which folds flat. Audio is provided through a 23-speaker sound system, with a 33-speaker system also available.

There's also 'Galaxy' ambient lighting across three layers, including the roof and footwells.

Standard advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) include traffic sign recognition, rear cross-traffic alert and safe exit warning, while there are 11 airbags with coverage for all three rows. There are also ISOFIX child-seat anchor points across both the second and third rows.

Other standard equipment includes a digital smartphone key and 21-inch alloy wheels, with 22-inch wheels optional. Buyers can also choose between six exterior colours and three interior colours.
