Volkswagen will offer its cheapest R model, the compact T-Roc R SUV, at a sharper drive-away price during the third quarter of 2023.

The $64,990 drive-away deal is a discount of roughly $3000 over the $61,990 before on-road costs sticker price, although it’s not the cheapest the T-Roc R has been – that honour belongs to the T-Roc R Grid Edition, which is still available in limited numbers at dealers.

Supply for the smallest R SUV has been solid throughout 2023, thanks in part to the Grid Edition, and is expected to remain that way through the third quarter of the year.

It’ll join the Polo and Golf GTI, and the Tiguan R, on the list of in-stock performance cars for Volkswagen in the second half of 2023.

Orders for the Golf R remain closed, although Volkswagen told media it’s rapidly working its way through the backlog and expects to make the car available once again around the end of 2023.

    Power in the T-Roc R comes from a version of Volkswagen’s EA888 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, tuned to deliver 221kW (5300-6600rpm) and 400Nm (2000-5300rpm).

    It’s mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
