Toyota Australia will recall over a thousand bZ4X electric SUVs to rectify a battery software issue which could cause a loss of drive.

There are no warning signs or symptoms ahead of the issue occurring.

“This battery is controlled by an onboard ECU [Electronic Control Unit]. Due to a software error, ‘EV System Malfunction’ warning message may be displayed, and multiple malfunction indicator lamps for different systems may illuminate on the Combination Meter,” Toyota Australia says in its recall notice.

“In the event of such malfunction, power steering and power assisted braking will continue to operate, however, the electric drive system will shut down. This can cause a loss of motive power while driving at a higher speed, increasing the risk of a collision.”

    • A total of 1101 vehicles are affected, produced between September 2025 and January 2026

Toyota will update the control software for the affected bZ4X batteries free of charge, with the automaker saying the work will take around 45 minutes to complete.

Owners of affected vehicles can contact their preferred Toyota dealer or call the Toyota Recall Hotline on 1800 987 366.

It's the third recall for the electric mid-size SUV since it was launched in Australia in February 2024.

The bZ4X was also part of a wider Toyota Australia recall in October 2025 which impacted 108,862 vehicles including the Corolla Cross, Camry, RAV4, LandCruiser Prado and LandCruiser 300 Series, among others.

It followed a September 2025 recall of 2166 bZ4Xs for a fault with the air-conditioning system which could cause the windscreen defroster to malfunction.
