Chinese-owned British brand MG has released two teaser images of a new electric hatchback, expected to be confirmed as the MG 2 when it's unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK next month.

The images, themed in the brand’s signature red colour, were accompanied by a statement from the automaker saying its global design boss, Jozef Kaban, will reveal two concept cars at the British event on July 9, 2026.

While one will be a ‘design vision’, MG said the other will be a B-segment (city-sized) electric vehicle confirmed for the UK market in 2027, where it will rival the BYD Atto 1 (sold there as the Dolphin Surf), Mini Cooper Electric and Kia EV2 (not sold here).

MG Motor Australia hasn't confirmed whether the new model will be offered in Australia or New Zealand, where it could potentially take the title of the country’s cheapest EV from the Atto 1, currently priced from $23,990 before on-road costs.

It would also compete with the Geely EX2 electric hatch – currently the best-selling vehicle in China – which is due in Australia before the end of 2026.

MG has previously suggested it will offer a smaller model below the MG 3, currently MG Motor Australia’s smallest vehicle at 4113mm long. That would make it significantly shorter than the recently introduced MG 4 Urban electric hatch, which measures 4395mm in length.

“I think everyone seems to be looking in that area at the moment – B-segment or just below it, around four metres in length, with that magic €20,000 [$32,872] price bracket,” MG Motor UK's head of product and planning, David Allison, told Auto Express in 2024.

“If anyone’s going to do that, we should be right there … It’s a combination of range, size and price – and if you hit all three, you’ll nail it.”

Mr Allison also suggested such a model could debut the MG 2 badge.

“It’ll probably get a new name but it would sit quite nicely within the existing convention. If you said MG 2 then you wouldn’t be a million miles away; 2 is the next step," he said.

While the B-segment isn't as significant in Australia as it is in the UK and Europe, with Light (B-segment) and Micro (A-segment) vehicles across all fuel types accounting for only around 3.0 per cent of new vehicle sales in May 2026, the MG 2 could still add to MG Motor Australia’s sales momentum.

The brand was up 18.4 per cent year-on-year in May 2026, led by the MG ZS SUV, to rank 10th overall.
