Jaguar’s new EV has an interior just as radical as its exterior

The Jaguar Type 01 is set to make the transition from concept to production car without losing its exaggeratedly long bonnet, and now its interior has also been revealed to look almost unchanged.

Ahead of the Type 01’s full unveiling in New York on October 6, 2026, Jaguar has shown off the interior of the new ultra-luxury electric vehicle (EV).

The central ‘spine’ seen in the cabin of the 2024 Type 00 concept has been carried through to the production vehicle, bisecting the interior and creating four individual spaces.

A large digital instrument cluster sits ahead of the driver, while there’s a small touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard that can be used to adjust the climate control and sound system volume.

Missing in these images is an infotainment touchscreen, though in the concept this was seen to fold up from the dashboard, as is likely the case for the production vehicle given Jaguar talks about “control on demand” digital interfaces and “hidden-until-needed technologies” in its press release.

Jaguar also makes note of “concealed compartments” and “unexpected moments of colour”, suggesting there will be various ‘surprise and delight’ features.

There’s a digital rear-view mirror, but it’s actually positioned at the base of the windscreen – at the same height as the exterior mirrors – to “help the driver focus”.

No rear windscreen is visible in the interior shots, though there's an expansive panoramic fixed-glass roof.

Instead of the clubby leather-and-wood cabins seen in Jaguars of yore, there’s a minimalist look overall with new materials inspired by brass and travertine stone.

The brass-inspired material runs along the central spine and the tops of the doors.

Striped trim on the bonnet is met with a matching pattern on the dashboard, again closely resembling the concept, while Jaguar’s ‘leaper’ logo is positioned on the door panels against a striped background.

“In contrast to the horizontal interior design norm, we emphasise its dramatic longitudinal nature through the central spine – an architectural statement that creates four individual spaces,” said Jaguar chief interior designer Thomas Holden in a release.

“With authentic materials, technology on demand and reductive flowing surfaces, Type 01 presents unmistakable drama and theatre that will define the modern luxury automotive interior of the future.”

Ahead of its unveiling on October 6, Jaguar is displaying a prototype Type 01 at Monterey Car Week in California this week, wearing a “distinctive new wrap”.

No wrap can conceal the Type 01’s bold proportions, with a long bonnet that says ‘V12 grand tourer’ more than ‘EV’, as well as a rakish roofline, sheer sides, and short overhangs.

Described as a 'luxury four-door GT', the Type 01 will feature air suspension and a tri-motor all-wheel drive electric powertrain producing more than 735kW of power and 1300Nm of torque.

It’s set to use an 800V electrical architecture and a huge 120kWh battery reportedly good for over 690km of electric range, and offer features such as four-wheel steering.

The Type 01 debuts the new Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), which can’t support combustion power – it’s electric or nothing.

The electric GT was first revealed in concept form in December 2024 and represented a sharp departure from the X391-series XJ limousine, which was set to become Jaguar’s new electric flagship before it was unceremoniously cancelled by former JLR CEO Thierry Bolloré early in 2021, just months ahead of its debut.

Mr Bolloré announced the XJ had been cancelled as it was “not fitting” with his new vision for the Jaguar brand, which was also announced in 2021 to be transitioning to a more exclusive market positioning – and going electric-only in the process.

The JLR CEO subsequently announced in November 2022 he was stepping down from the top role, while chief creative officer Gerry McGovern – under whom the Type 00 concept was designed – was officially announced earlier this year to have left the company, following reports he was walked from the building.

JLR currently isn't manufacturing any Jaguar models globally, even in China where it has a joint venture with Chery.

The existing Jaguar lineup progressively exited production during 2024 and 2025, leaving the brand with only leftover stock of its discontinued models to sell.

However, the Type 01 will reportedly be joined by two more models based on the new JEA, with Jaguar ditching its role as a British BMW competitor and instead aiming its sights higher at the likes of Bentley.

Unlike Jaguar's previous (and thus far only) EV, the defunct I-Pace electric SUV which battled the likes of the BMW iX3, the Type 01 is positioned more towards the ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce Spectre and Cadillac Celestiq.

However, Jaguar has previously indicated the Type 01 will be priced from around £100,000 (~A$191,000), making it vastly more affordable than either of those full-size electric grand tourers.
