Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC gains a convertible variant

The new Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible shares the coupe's drivetrain, but the chassis has been retuned from track fiend to boulevard cruiser.

The flagship model of the latest Ford Mustang range, the Dark Horse SC, will soon be available as a convertible and is said to be the most powerful drop-top in the car's history. It's also the first convertible to wear the Dark Horse label.

Like the coupe that was unveiled at the beginning of the year, the Dark Horse SC convertible has a supercharged 5.2-litre cross-plane crank V8 making 593kW and 895Nm, which drives the rear wheels via a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission.

That's quite an upgrade from the plain Dark Horse, which has a 5.0-litre Coyote V8 making 373kW and 567Nm.

Visually the convertible also has all the accoutrements of its coupe sibling, including a new front fascia with larger air intakes, a bonnet with more vents, a taller carbon-fibre rear wing, and a more aggressive rear bumper design.

According to Arie Groeneveld, chief engineer for the entire Dark Horse SC program, while the coupe has been tuned to deliver the best lap times possible, the aim was quite different for the convertible, which has been engineered "to be the ultimate top-down grand touring machine".

To that end, the team has set up the MagneRide suspension for street driving, with the result reportedly being a "smooth, comfortable cruise that still stays planted when you lean into the accelerator".

In addition to the experience of hearing the SC's supercharged V8 unhindered by a roof, the convertible comes with a few unique options. These include Precision Purple Metallic paint, silver brake calipers, and an interior finished in Black Onyx and Space Grey.

The American order book for the Dark Horse SC convertible opens during the third quarter of 2026, but the first drop tops won't start arriving in showrooms until the second quarter of 2027.

No word yet on Australian availability, but given there's been no movement regarding the Dark Horse SC coupe, the chances seem slim.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but in the US convertible Mustang variants typically carry a US$5000 premium over their coupe counterparts. If our logic holds, the Dark Horse SC convertible would start from US$111,585 (A$157,400).

That's quite a step up from the GT Premium convertible, which is priced from US$57,075 (A$80,500) and is powered by a 358kW/567Nm 5.0-litre V8.
