There are now three electric cars priced under $40,000 before on-road costs in Australia, with GWM slashing the base price of its Ora.

Previously priced at $43,990 before on-road costs, GWM’s electric hatchback now retails for $39,990 before on-roads in base grade – just $1000 more than the MG 4 51kWh Excite and $1100 more than the BYD Dolphin Premium.

Drive-away pricing differs from state to state, but the Ora Standard Range now costs as little as $40,606 drive-away in the Australian Capital Territory and tops out at $42,927 drive-away in Western Australia.

It isn’t just the base model that has received a price cut. The Extended Range is now $45,990 before on-road costs, a reduction of $2000, while the flagship GT is $51,990 before on-roads, also down $2000.

A new Ultra variant slots in between the Extended Range and GT on price, with a sticker of $48,990 before on-road costs. GWM hasn’t released any imagery of this variant.

Over the Extended Range, it gains:

    • Hands-free power tailgate
    • Panoramic sunroof
    • Heated steering wheel
    • Heated, ventilated and massaging front seats
    • Six-way power driver’s seat with memory
    • Power-folding exterior mirrors with memory

Buyers of the Ultra, along with the Extended Range and GT, will receive a free wall-mounted GWM Charging Station, valued at $1690, which features RFID authentication and can be connected to single-phase power.

This offer will end on September 30, or while charger stocks last.

If you’ve already placed an order for an Ora, you’re still eligible for the charger offer.

All models continue to be backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty with five years of roadside assistance and five years of capped-price servicing.

The significant price reduction comes as the first Oras start reaching GWM’s Australian dealerships, and just weeks after MG and BYD announced the sharp, sub-$40k price tags of their entry-level electric cars – also small hatchbacks.
