BYD Australia posted its highest ever monthly sales figure in June, when it sold no fewer than 18,881 new electric and hybrid vehicles – just 243 less than the preliminary tally supplied by long-time market-leader Toyota (19,124).
That correlated to a 13.5 per cent market share for the month, just 0.2 per cent lower than Toyota’s 13.7 per cent share.
It’s the third consecutive month this year BYD has finished second behind Toyota, and brings its half-year 2026 total to 52,335 vehicles. Toyota is sitting at approximately 95,000 deliveries year-to-date.
BYD's staggering monthly sales total, which is over 10,000 units higher than its previous monthly record in May, and which the company itself says is “a feat unlikely to be repeated for some time”, brings to 34,794 the total number of vehicles it has sold in the past three months alone, with 7702 sold in April and 8211 sold in May.

Ford placed a distant third in June with 9189 sales for a 6.6 per cent market share.
In addition, almost 1800 Denza vehicles from BYD’s luxury and off-road brand were delivered in the second quarter of 2026, bringing total deliveries to 2419 since the brand was launched in Australia in February of this year.
The result means BYD has kept its promise by delivering over 30,000 ‘new energy’ vehicles across April, May and June, following a special delivery of almost 5000 additional BYD and Denza vehicles on a BYD-owned vessel on June 2.
“We asked our customers to back us in, and they did, and we delivered,” said BYD Australia chief operating officer Stephen Collins in a press release this morning.

“We thank them for having faith in us to make good on a promise we made in early April, which was to deliver vehicles in record time when orders more than doubled as cost-of-living pressures intensified with skyrocketing fuel prices.”
Mr Collins said the record June delivery number was the result of full factory support with increased production, as well as the support of local BYD dealers which ramped up its delivery centres and offered customers the ability to take delivery outside of regular business hours, including evenings and weekends.
“The spirit of cooperation from our dealers and appreciation from our customers was great. We even had food vans on selected occasions to make things easier for everyone,” he said.
The Sealion 7 mid-size electric SUV was again BYD’s top-seller in June, with 4730 sales, followed by the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute (3398), Atto 2 small SUV (2482), Sealion 6 mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV (2218).

The record June result continues the rapid rise of China’s largest automaker in Australia since it arrived here in 2022, when its former independent distributor boldly claimed the brand would overtake Toyota as Australian auto market leader by 2030.
BYD's official factory distributor now says only that it aims to finish “near” the top three auto brands by the end of 2026. Although it remains well behind Toyota so far this year, when the Japanese giant has sold an average of about 15,000 vehicles, it appears to be well on track to hit that target.
Toyota has been the local market leader for 24 years and remains the only brand to sell more than 200,000 vehicles in a single year, with 239,863 vehicles sold in last year’s record total market of 1,241,037 units.
BYD, meantime, has led a surge of new Chinese auto brands arriving here in recent years, with Chinese-made vehicles now accounting for a third of all new vehicles sold in Australia, and brands including BYD, GWM, MG and Chery now being regular fixtures in the top 10.
