The Jaecoo J5 small SUV lineup has been completed in Australia with the imminent arrival of a new hybrid option in local showrooms.

Due to arrive in August and offered in a single, highly specified Summit trim, the Jaecoo J5 Hybrid is priced at $34,990 drive-away. That slots it between the J5 Summit petrol at $29,990 drive-away and the J5 EV at $36,990 drive-away.

It shares its exterior design with the petrol-powered J5, apart from 18-inch 'Aero' alloy wheels borrowed from the J5 EV.

The J5 Hybrid features a 105kW/215Nm turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with a 150kW/310Nm electric motor and a dedicated hybrid transmission, with total system outputs of 165kW and 295Nm.

Omoda Jaecoo Australia claims fuel consumption of 5.6L/100km on the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 126g/km.

    Standard equipment includes:

    • Panoramic fixed glass roof
    • Power tailgate
    • Surround-view camera
    • 18-inch alloy wheels
    • 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster
    • 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system
    • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
    • 50W wireless phone charger
    • Heated and ventilated front seats
    • Colour-adjustable ambient lighting

It also features synthetic leather upholstery which Omoda Jaecoo claims is pet-friendly, made of an antibacterial and wear-resistant silicone-based material.

The suite of safety equipment includes seven airbags, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

Omoda Jaecoo backs its vehicles with an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with eight years of capped-price servicing and up to eight years of roadside assistance.

The J5 Hybrid will take on a growing contingent of small hybrid SUVs, including the Tiggo 4 Hybrid and C5 Hybrid from Omoda Jaecoo's sister brand Chery.

The Tiggo 4 Hybrid is priced at $29,990 drive-away in base Urban trim, and $32,990 drive-away in flagship Ultimate guise, while the C5 Hybrid is priced at $31,990 drive-away as an Urban and $34,990 drive-away as an Ultimate.

In terms of fuel consumption, the J5 Hybrid's 5.6L/100km figure means it's thirstier than the Tiggo 4 (5.4L/100km) and the C5 (4.9L/100km).

Rivals from outside the Chery group include the GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid ($32,990 drive-away, currently $29,990 d/a), MG ZS Hybrid+ (from $29,990 drive-away) and Hyundai Kona Hybrid (from $36,950 before on-road costs, currently $39,990 drive-away).

The J5 Hybrid is the first conventional hybrid in Omoda Jaecoo's Australian showrooms, though the Chinese brand offers plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the rest of its lineup.
