Spanish newcomer Cupra will offer four versions of its sporty Leon hatchback, priced from $43,990 before on-road costs.

The most affordable variant, the V, won’t arrive until 2023, though orders will open in the third quarter of 2022.

The rest of the range arrives here this July. Orders open in June.

The Leon hatchback will offer the 140kW engine from the Skoda Octavia, the 180kW engine from the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the plug-in hybrid powertrain from the Golf GTE not sold in Australia, and the 221kW engine from the Golf GTI Clubsport in a single body style.

Sadly, the more practical Sportstourer isn’t part of the line-up.

All models feature fixed pricing and three years of free servicing, and are backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

The V, VZ and VZe all feature largely the same level of equipment, although the range-topping VZx – a front-wheel drive alternative to the Volkswagen Golf R – includes some additional features and cosmetic tweaks.
