The 2020 Toyota HiLux is available in a mind-bending 31 variants with pricing ranging from $21,865 before on-road costs for the manual petrol Workmate to $64,490 before on-roads for the automatic diesel Rugged X.
There have eight generations of HiLux since the original made its debut in 1968.
The HiLux has been Australia’s most popular vehicle over the past few years. It accounts for just over 22 per cent of sales and is just behind the Ford Ranger on 24.3 per cent.
In the 4×2 ute sector, however, the HiLux is king with a commanding 35.8 per cent of the segment, streets ahead of the Isuzu D-Max on 14.0 per cent.

Engine
In Australia, the Toyota HiLux is available with one petrol engine: a 2.7-litre four-cylinder with 122kW and 245Nm.
The petrol engine can hooked up to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, but is only available on 4×2 models.
There’s also two common-rail four-cylinder turbo-diesels on offer: a base 2.4-litre with 110kW and 400Nm, and a 2.8-litre with 130kW and 420Nm when fitted with a manual transmission – or 450Nm when paired with an automatic.
Both diesels are available on 4×2 and 4×4 models, and can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.
Fuel Economy
The 2.7-litre petrol engine in the 2020 Toyota HiLux manual uses between 10.4 and 11.1L/100km on the combined cycle depending on body style and transmission.
For the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel economy ranges between 7.2 and 8.6L/100km, while the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel drinks between 7.7 and 9.0L/100km.
Dimensions
The HiLux ute measures 5330mm to 5415mm long, between 1700mm and 1815mm tall, and between 1800mm and 1885mm wide, with a 3085mm wheelbase.
The kerb weight of the HiLux ranges from 1450kg for the 4×2 single-cab manual cab chassis to 2252kg for the range-topping Rugged X automatic.
Safety
The 2020 Toyota HiLux has an ANCAP safety rating of five stars, with scores of 96 per cent in adult occupant protection, 87 per cent in child occupant protection, 88 per cent in vulnerable road user protection, and 78 per cent in safety assist.
