2024 Toyota TGRA 86 race car review
The Toyota 86 is the original compact rear-wheel drive coupe that helped revive affordable sports cars in Australia. It is no longer on sale as a new model, having been replaced by the newer GR86, but its simple formula remains highly appealing: a naturally aspirated boxer engine, manual or automatic transmission choices, light weight and balanced handling. Developed with Subaru, the 86 prioritised driver involvement over outright power, making it popular with enthusiasts and track-day drivers. Its cabin and refinement were modest, yet the steering, chassis balance and accessible limits gave it real character. The 86 remains an important modern Toyota performance model and the foundation for the sharper GR86 that followed.
