Xpeng L05: Tesla Model Y rival spied ahead of Australian launch

The Xpeng L05 SUV, a rival to the Tesla Model Y and Zeekr 7X, has been spied ahead of its official global reveal and scheduled Australian arrival in early 2027.

While previously revealed in Chinese government filings, the L05 has yet to be officially unveiled, with these images posted by Autohome the first to show the vehicle beyond the pictures accompanying the government documents.

Model grades are yet to be announced, but the vehicle pictured wears the same 20-inch alloy wheels shown in the filings, along with yellow brake calipers, cameras in the front guards, recessed door handles and privacy glass.

The Xpeng L05 will be produced in both range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) and battery-electric vehicle (EV) versions. It's the third model in Xpeng’s youth-oriented Mona vehicle line.

Another Mona model, the smaller L03, is a rival to the BYD Atto 3 and Geely EX5 SUVs and has also been confirmed for Australia.

It's scheduled to arrive even sooner, with Xpeng Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) announcing a fourth-quarter (October-December) 2026 local launch.

The L05 will use the same powertrains as the L03. In the smaller model, the EREV combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 37.2kWh battery, providing 315-325km of electric driving range and a total range of 1330-1380km, both under the more lenient CLTC testing standard.

The electric version uses a 183kW/280Nm rear-mounted motor. Entry-level L03s have a 56kWh battery offering up to 550km of CLTC range, while a 69kWh battery extends this to 650km.

The L05 EV, however, will use a slightly larger 71.1kWh battery pack giving it up to 660km of CLTC range.

It measures 4870mm long, 1930mm wide and 1636mm tall, with a 2940mm wheelbase. This makes it 112mm longer, 10mm wider and 14mm lower than Xpeng's existing G6 on a 50mm longer wheelbase.

The Autohome images also show the cabin, which is dominated by a large central touchscreen and features a floating centre console, two-spoke steering wheel and column-mounted drive selector.

The L05 will form part of a new-model onslaught from Xpeng ANZ after it took over the brand’s local operations earlier this year.

As well as an updated version of the G6 electric SUV – the model with which the brand was launched locally in late 2024 – Xpeng has confirmed it will bring the seven-seat X9 people mover to Australia before the end of September.

Xpeng plans to follow this with the L03 and G9L large SUV – the latter a rival to the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90 – before introducing the even larger GX SUV, which will compete with the upcoming Zeekr 9X.

The company recently had a legal challenge from its former Australian distributor, TrueEV, dismissed by the Federal Court after TrueEV failed to lodge the full $1.26 million security required for the case to proceed to trial.
