Tesla has issued a recall for almost 35,000 Model 3and Model Y electric vehicles (EVs) in Australia, though it says the fault can be resolved with an over-the-air software update.
“Due to manufacturing defect, the bonnet latch assembly may not detect when it is opened by the driver and therefore fail to warn the driver of ‘open bonnet’,” the company says in its recall notice.
“If the vehicle is driven with unlatched bonnet, it may open abruptly when driving and could result in obstruction of the driver’s view.
“Obstruction of the driver’s view may increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to road users.”
It follows a recall in the US earlier this week for the same issue that involved more than 1.8 million vehicles.

Tesla is contacting owners of affected vehicles.
It’s deploying an over-the-air software update to fix the issue, and says vehicles running on software version 2024.20.3 aren’t affected by the issue.
You can check which software version you’re on by tapping Controls and then Software on the touchscreen.
If you have any further questions, you can contact Tesla Australia on 1800 646 952.
