Mitsubishi Triton gets ride, handling upgrades, Australian timing unclear

The Mitsubishi Triton has received rally-inspired chassis upgrades, including new components from Yamaha, to improve its ride comfort and handling ability.

The upgraded Thai-built ute reaches dealerships in Japan – where it’s only sold in top-spec GSR trim – from February 19. Mitsubishi Australia has yet to confirm whether these updates will arrive here.

Mitsubishi says it has changed the settings of the front suspension and the body mounts to reduce vibration, and improved the responsiveness of the front and rear shock absorbers.

It has fitted Yamaha Motor’s Performance Damper to the front and rear of the ute “to regulate and absorb deformation and vibrations of the vehicle body while riding” and to “[reduce] up and down shaking when going over bumps and minute vibrations transmitted from the engine”.

The result, the company claims, is greater handling stability and improved ride comfort, not only in everyday city commuting but also more aggressive driving.

Mitsubishi already uses the motorcycle manufacturer’s Performance Damper in its Triton rally car.

Other changes to the Japanese-market Triton GSR for 2026 include new ‘dark titanium’ centre console and door handle trim, as well as the standard fitment of tailgate assist – a feature already standard on some Australian-market variants.

It’s unclear if Mitsubishi Australia will follow suit in rolling out these chassis upgrades.

The Triton is about to have its most direct competition yet in Australia, with the new Nissan Navara recently revealed as a rebadged version of Mitsubishi’s ute.

However, one key difference under the skin is the use of a unique suspension tune by Australian engineering firm Premcar, with unique dampers.

Nissan and Premcar say they have improved body control and ride comfort relative to the Triton.

The current Triton launched here early in 2024, with the new Navara lagging behind by roughly a couple of years.
